Hope Feeds the Heart – A Production by Stardale Women’s Group
The Hope Feeds the Heart Art Project is the latest artistic offering by the indigenous girls of the Stardale Women’s Group based in Calgary. Past projects have dealt with very heavy themes, such as youth suicide, a response to the Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women Commission, alienation, and discrimination. This year, the group has turned their focus on a more positive theme: Hope.
While not all the art the girls have created is necessarily hopeful in and of itself, what is felt to be hopeful is that after so many years, people are listening to their message. Many of the Stardale girls live in very difficult circumstances, but there is an undercurrent of hope that after so many years people from the mainstream of society are finally paying attention and maybe someday things will change for the better.
The Hope Art project is an invitation to view the girls at work creating and sharing their art in an immersive theatrical presentation. There is no stage as such. Audience members are asked to enter the world of artistic creation to see up close what the girls are creating, and to engage in conversation with them about their art and indeed their lives. There are four main areas of activity: visual art, poetry, video, and music. There is absolutely no barrier between the artists and the audience. We hope to break down the barriers, not only between audience and artist but between Indigenous and non-Indigenous people.
